St Augustine

St Augustine is a place where you can really get a true sense of history as it was hundreds of years ago. It was founded on September 8, 1565. A fort, the Castillo de San Marcos was built between the years of 1672-1695. Ruins of the original fort still remain standing and it is a very popular tourist place to visit. This isn’t the only old location. The old jail also still stands. It was built in 1891.

Vilano Bridge was built in 1927. It was a wooden lift draw bridge that connected the island to the mainland. There is a lighthouse, several old hotels, an amphitheater, and several parks where you can see other things. Another fort that you may want to visit is the Fort Matanzas National Monument. If you are wondering what to see, there are numerous tours for you to take. These tours will ensure that you do not miss anything. However, if that isn’t enough, then you may also want to enjoy one of the many events that are held throughout the year in this beautiful tourist city.

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday cannon firing takes place at the Castillo de San Marcos. There is a farmer’s market each weekend as well. There are bird walks, special weekends, such as Vampire Weekend. Other holidays have special occasions as well. At random times, there are even marathons which allow you to run through the streets of St. Augustine. One of the most noteworthy is a 5k that leads from the Old Jail to the Vilano Bridge. It is an event known as Escape from St. Augustine. It takes place around Halloween and invites people who aren’t running to at least dress up in their favorite costumes. It is a party that many look forward to throughout the year.
